Editorial Consultant

Helping you distil your message, get your argument straight, keep your audience engaged, and make the desired impact.

For more than twenty years, I have built a portfolio of globally renowned clients, directing the content development and production of flagship publications and communications for digital and print platforms. Much of this work is in international development. I have an excellent understanding of different sectors and thematic areas. I can shape extremely complex technical and academic material so that the right message reaches the reader in a clear and pleasing form.

I can create a meaningful narrative from numbers and statistics.

How I work

I work at all stages of the editorial process: from the germination of the idea to the final polish. A lot happens in between, and I can be of help at any point. With the principles of clarity and coherence driving all my editorial work, I will do whatever it takes to get there.

Writing: from a blank page

I can develop content from scratch, in response to a clear brief. I can create a meaningful narrative from numbers and statistics. I can turn seemingly dry, technical content into a compelling narrative, and a good story.

Deep, substantive editing: saying what you mean

Substantive editing work is about ensuring the logical ordering of ideas. It involves questioning and suggestions about the structure, stripping out any padding, developing a template, implementing intuitive navigation features, and filling any gaps.

Style and language work: how you say it

Style and language work can be of impact only when a sound structure and clear thread are in place. An analogy I like is that interior decorating can only be effective when the architecture is complete. This stage of editing involves choosing the right language and vocabulary, and consistently applying any style conventions, to produce a smooth and flowing narrative.

What my clients say

"Catherine edited two of my publications, one an edited volume whose authors were mostly second language English speakers. If ever the standard acknowledgement ‘without whom this book would not have been written’ was meant sincerely and truthfully then this is it. She is a truly brilliant editor and a delight to work with. I would never again publish anything without her."

— David Lewis, Executive Director of Corruption Watch, and former chair of the South African Competition Tribunal
