EDITORIAL CONSULTANT
Products & Fees
We have an initial discussion to assess your needs for an editorial project.
First, you brief me about:
-
your objectives for a piece of writing
-
what type of content it is
-
who will be reading it
-
the channels on which it will be published
-
schedule and timelines
I look at the preliminary draft, advise you on the work required, and give you a quote.
The most important principles in pricing are transparency and certainty. Before I start, you know what you will be getting as well as the maximum cost. I am providing indicative rates, which may be tweaked, depending on the brief.

RATE PER WORD: 320 WORDS

Developing new content
This is an iterative process involving close communication between us. Working from a clear brief, and writing from scratch, I devise a structure or template for you to approve. Then using your source material and following your guidelines, I prepare the first draft. There are usually at least three iterations in this process: i) the first draft that I produce; ii) the second draft that incorporates your changes; and iii) the third draft that includes the final style and language work.
$65 per 320 words

Substantive editing
In-depth structural editing is also an iterative process, involving close communication between us. There are usually three iterations: i) I make detailed comments and annotations and ask questions in the draft. ii) You send it back to me and I incorporate all your changes, comments and answers. I do some style and language editing. iii) You review it and I complete the style and language work.
$44 per 320 words

Copy-editing
This starts once there are no more content or structural issues. This process involves careful style and language work, ensuring an error-free and polished final product.
$22 per 320 words

Proofreading
The final check just before the document is laid out, published or submitted. It can be done electronically or on hard copy.
$16 per 320 words

Repurposing content
I adapt existing content into other formats for different channels and audiences. Because the levels of complexity can vary so much, it is not possible to give a set rate.
Negotiated on a case-by-case basis
RATE PER PAGE
Rate per page
A word rate is not always the best way to quote. There might be complex visual features that need attention, which do not fall into the word count. I assess the material and calculate an amount per page. This would be in the ballpark of the rate per word for the particular type of editing.
HOURLY OR DAILY RATE
Hourly or daily rate
Once I have seen the material, I give you a maximum time estimate based on an hourly or daily rate. This would be in the ballpark of the rate per word for the particular type of editing.
FAST TURNAROUND
Fast turnaround
If the piece of writing needs to be completed urgently, there is a surcharge – usually 30% of the total.
